Labour Standards Complaint Worker3
A Labour Standards Complaint was filed at Labour Standards Division of the Department of Labour and Advanced Education, against Imperial Cleaners alleging Worker3 “never received overtime pay despite frequently working more than 48 hours per week,” and “was not paid for Sunday, November 30 shift (3:30 p.m. to 11:00p.m.).
Furthermore, the complaint alleges that the Worker suffered “reprisals for trying to exercise [her] rights under the Code,” and was “constructively dismissed.”

“Imperial blatantly violated … the Act by terminating” a third of the workforce at Alderney Gate “in an effort to defeat the organizing campaign and create a chilling effect on other employees,” according to an Unfair Labour Practice complaint filed at the Nova Scotia Labour Board.

Nova Scotia Supreme Court case against HRM & Imperial Cleaners
On February 28, 2025, SEIU Local 2, the Union representing the workers at Alderney Gate, filed a Nova Scotia Supreme Court case against HRM & Imperial Cleaners over the displacement of the SEIU janitors at Alderney Gate.
SEIU had substantial reasons to believe that Imperial was circumventing HRM’s Supplier Code of Conduct that requires a living wage to be paid at all HRM-owned properties.
